SharePoint 2010 and PowerPoint 2010 Broadcast

In PowerPoint 2010 there is a new feature called broadcast slideshow. With the right infrastructure behind it the idea is that the presenter can set up the slide deck and then present it using the local LAN or the internet

SharePoint 2010 Broadcast Site

Built into SharePoint 2010 is the ability to create a site collection based on a broadcast site template, this template provides all the functionality needed by PowerPoint 2010 to broadcast slide decks and if the site is available through the internet then you can use it to broadcast the slide deck to any user outside of your organisation.

Its very simple to setup the site collection. Simply go to central admin and create a new site collection and select the broadcast site template (its in the enterprise section)

All you need to do then is logon to the site as an admin user and put the right groups into the site group collections for viewers, presenters and administrators

Setup PowerPoint

Once you have your slide deck ready click on File | Share| Broadcast Slide Show

If this is the first time you have broadcast a slide deck then you will need to setup the service. To do this click on Change Broadcast Service

Click on Add a new service

Enter the URL of the site collection you are using for the broadcast site

Click Add and then click Start Broadcast

Note

You can use group policy to setup the broadcast services within PowerPoint

PowerPoint will now contact the site and setup the show and you will be presented with a URL to give to your users. They can then view your slide deck as you go through it.

Conclusion

The system is very simple to setup and use and I can see lots of uses for it in education. I am sure it will make a big difference to the way PowerPoint can be used in Schools
